Ontario Power Generation has announced that it has purchased the former headquarters of General Motors Canada in Oshawa.
The agreement to purchase the property at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive in Oshawa was announced by OPG on February 13, 2023.
The parcel of land included in the purchase covers 141 acres and rests between Oshawa Second Marsh and McLaughlin Bay, just south of Highway 401 at the eastern border with Clarington.
A large portion of the lands are greenspace that comprises a portion of the McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve.
The complex consists of approximately 285,000 square feet of office and amenity space.
According to OPG, they intend to retrofit the building prior to occupancy in late 2024.
Prior to the announcement, OPG had previously announced intentions to consolidate its corporate headquarters to Clarington from a number of locations in Ontario.
The new OPG headquarters will host approximately 2000 employees.
Details on the purchase relating to price and closing date were not provided with the announcement.
Oshawa, Clarington share sentiments on the purchase
The municipality of Clarington has expressed disappointment in the announcement, as OPG had previously announced its intention to relocate to Clarington back in 2019.
Oshawa, on the other hand, has heralded the decision as another in a long string of substantial successes in the revitalization and growth of the city recently.
